~ It Pays to Advertise ~

It's strange how one company's attempts
to market itself and its products can
actually revive interest in and boost
sales for OTHERS
active in a similar field.

~ Very Beautiful Balls ~

Yesterday, I saw this video showing how
to make <very beautiful balls> (for use
in iClone) with .Genetica. - an application
by Spiral Graphics.

"The Ultimate Texture Generator for iClone"

Curious, I nipped over to their website to
learn about pricing - expecting at least one
of their offerings to be .FREE. (silly me),
cheap or $20-ish.

The "budget" version is $149 - whilst the
flagship edition is creeping up towards a
grand
. I had to laugh and was reminded
of .Photo SEAM . a texture-maker created
(probably solely) by "Oscar" at Media Chance.

~ Background Background ~

Bought when hideous semi-transparent
pictorial backgrounds were the home-made
web-page ~ order of the day ~, coincidentally,
yesterday was the ninth anniversary of my
purchase of that $35 dollar utility and I was
spurred to re-visit it online.

~ P.S. PS, PS & PS ~

Despite being a Media Chance customer, I
was not aware that .Photo SEAM . has been
superseded by (another P.S. that is not the
"P.S." of (the NOT PeerlesS) .PhotoShop.
but rather is)
- .Pattern STUDIO..

An enhanced version of the legacy product,
I am not sure how either would compare to
.Genetica. and do not consider I have
texturing needs that could not already
be met by my present software.

More appealing to me were new versions
of .Photo BRUSH and .Real DRAW.
but it was the, more recently conceived,
.Dynamic Auto Painter. that I found
so irresitable that I had to download
a trial version immediately.

Now in its second iteration, it is a standalone
program proffering "painterly" graphics
filters that promise to set themselves apart
from standard "natural media" plug-ins by
emulating the recognisable styles of
individual artists in unique, directable
full re-renderings of source images.

I am very keen to experiment with both of
the Van Gogh Pre-Sets. I want to see how
HIS approach would transform a work
that is highly characteristic of someone else.

An attraction even greater than this is
the opprtunity to create my own "Styles".
I think this involves creating brush
elements from any visual component.

If this can include words - perhaps I
could make a picture speak a thousand
of them. It's a fun aim and I aim to HAVE
fun. I think the only let downs may be
caused by the RAM on my laptop being
the bare (Baa ?) minimum.

Trial Version Installation

[BLOGGED] July 30, 2010

16:33

Installing the trial version of Dynamic
Auto Painter 2.5.1.

16:36

I've opened the program. The Styles
have icons in a Panel on the left.

The Panel can be made wider but
its contents don't enlarge.

16:39

The Presets are --->

Aquarell
Benson
Book
Camille
Cezanne
Chalk
Felt Tip
Illustrator
Klimt
Monet
Pastels
Pencil
Portraitist
Realism
Sargent
Starry
Sunflowers
Tempera
Vegetables
Watercolor
Wax
WetOnWet
Woodtech

16:48

Gave it a Dr.Seuss to do a Van Gogh
to - and I'm INSTANTLY impressed.

I think this has gotta be a BUY !!

It's up to you when you stop the
process. I think a lot could be
done with "Psuedo-Speed-Painting"
screencasts. Only issue is needing
tonnes of disk space.

I really like this - and it's image one (!!!!)
and I've played with none of the sliders yet !

19:25

It took a long time - but I've settled on
some screen capture settings that create
great quality results in tiny file sizes.

Matching PAL DVD dimensions and its
frame rate, picked Microsoft M-PEG4
Video Codec 2 - configured bitrate to
6000kbps and put quality at 100.

3 minutes of footage in under 4MB
where other codecs were exceeding
200MB.

The Manual & Manual Manipulation

[BLOGGED] August 04, 2010

01:07

I've read the DAP2 Manual - and paid
particular attention to the section
about creating your own Brush Set
and Style. This customised Preset
is referred to as an AOP (not an OAP)
and there are legions of variables
that may be tinkered with.

First off, though - you need to make
a pair of 3000x3000 pixel j-pegs
to divide into 100 boxes. You don't
have to fill all of these but they
represent the slots where you can
place your personalised pictures.

Designing these squares (full of
smaller squares) would be easier
in a graphics program that has
a simple "Make Grid" command
and a "Snap To" constraint
facility as you need perfect precision
to make the Alpha Mask that pairs
the full-colour images.

THIS gives purpose to Layers.

MS PhotoDraw does not have Layers
- so I must investigate it to see if
there is any way I can make a rigid
grid or "Lock" any graphic element
to an anchored position on the screen.

I may have a look at the trial for
MediaChance's PhotoBrush - but I
am sure I have read that that
program doesn't use Layers either.

I have Painter 9.5 - so, perhaps
I could use THAT for making
Templates. It would take a
heck of a PUSH though.

[BLOGGED] August 05, 2010

08:02

Caught up typing the last blog post
after some faffing around re-locating
THIS web-page as it had vanished
from my hard-drive.

It took just seconds to find the
"Snap to Grid" Option in my
trusty PhotoDraw.

It's something I have NEVER used
but is so simple to activate with a
tick in the "View" drop-down Menu.

The excellent in-program Help
System relays this information
in a single "snappy" sentence.

Whoever designed PhotoDraw
was really ~ streets ahead ~
and I continue to mourn
its fate.

I wish I knew who the creators
were and what happened to them.

Purse-Chasing Purchase

[BLOGGED] October 12, 2010

11:49

Having been pre-occupied with illustrating
and writing notes for my nearly three-year-old
animated poem The $ub-Rhym€ ("Mark" It !),
I have not had time to return to this amazing
piece of software, since my last post in the
summer, despite having multiple ideas for
how I would like to use it.

Today, I visited the MediaChance website
and saw that the program is on special
offer via eBay as a (Canadian) Thanksgiving
Promotion. It appears to be selling for
around £16 instead of the £35 I was
anticipating (and, as an unwaged fart,
staying off).

I am just verifying that this affordable sum
is for the latest DAP2 and not an earlier
defunct version and if it IS - I shall
leap to buy straight away - with more
impetus than EVER to get $ub-Rhym€'s
mitherings completed.

EXCITING !!

Custom "Brush Sets"/AOPs

[BLOGGED] October 18, 2010

17:12

I've only just bought Digital Auto Painter
2.51 (at a bargain price) and already it
has been upgraded to 2.53 (which
apparently lets you change the rotation
and/or mirror aspect of imported source
images).

Despite STILL not having finished the
text for $ub-Rhym€, I spent all of
yesterday evening re-discovering how
to make custom brush sets (known as
AOPs) for DAP.

The program's instructions advise
constructing 3000x3000 pixel
grids of 10x10 300x300 pixel
unit squares - giving you 100
boxes to paste graphic elements
into.

You have to make a Colour Set to
hold the images in the state in which
you intend them to be displayed and
a Black & White version to act as Alpha.

I was working with a Mix file in
PhotoDraw that contained TWO
3000x3000 grids.

It couldn't cope as the file size
grew beyond 60MB.

When I switched down to a single
3000x3000 construction my machine
still fell over complaining that (with
2GB of RAM on board) it didn't have
enough memory.

This may be a limitation of the software
as much as my hardware. PhotoDraw
was released in 1999 long before 2GB
of RAM was a bare minimum.

I decided to try reducing my MIX files
to 1000x1000 pixels and then exporting
just the required pair of .jpgs at the
required 3000x3000 resolution.

This works ! I had to enlarge the black
background on the Alpha Master Board
to stop it adding white lines where the
two images didn't quite match but now
it's great.

I'm blogging this for myself so that I
can find out what to do if I have to
stay away for two months and
consequently forget everything again.

NOTES TO SELF -->

Make 1000x1000 Picture Size
Input 1000x1000 Background
Input 100x100 Element

Customise the Grid by Selecting
"Snap-to-Grid" ****AND****
defining --->

Picture Setup --> Options -->
Customise Grid -->

Horizontal Spacing = 100
Vertical Spacing = 100

Use "Fit Picture to Background" and
extend the Background BEYOND the borders.
